This series effectively relays the idea that while many use their bodies to sell themselves sexually online, the text of the profile is what many are truly attempting to sell:  the verbal simulacrum of the interior self put on display and projected onto the image of their physical avatars.  The text used in online dating profiles is often far more revealing than the surface of the ocean of naked flesh to which everyone ultimately pays the most attention.  The pictures seem to function as the bait meant to lure people into reading the profile onto which people can assert they are more than just an image of a physical body.

I would imagine that we who write such profiles on “dating” sites and applications do so because we personally identify with the qualities and aspects the words symbolize to us as we write them, and hope that others can see their lives enmeshed in these qualities.  It’s a reaching out of the interior world for exterior approval.  The words are symbolically printed under the skin of the image, and we hope someone will come along eventually who cares enough to read them and sees the words as part of or even before the image.
